The Handicomp Golf Handicap System

The HGHS was designed to serve leagues, clubs, groups, and golfers of every type. Like the WHS™, it aims to reflect a golfer’s potential as accurately as possible.


Originating in league play, HGHS is built on 9-hole scores. It uses the most representative data—15 of the last 25 scores—while factoring in yardage and par to ensure fairness. For example, a score of 45 from a challenging set of tees may be rated as stronger than a 44 from an easier set. 


Scores are first converted into a Base Handicap (a decimal, e.g., 14.1) and then translated into a Tee Handicap (a whole number, e.g., 15) based on course difficulty. Base Handicaps are recalculated in real time whenever a new score is posted, keeping results both accurate and relevant.


At the heart of handicap calculation is a key question: which scores best reflect a golfer’s potential? One score is never enough, and every score isn’t representative either. By analyzing tens of thousands of golfers and millions of rounds, Handicomp identified the optimal balance: 15 of the last 25 nine-hole scores, dropping the worst nine and one best score.


This formula adapts as golfers build their record. When fewer than 25 scores are available, a progressive table adjusts the calculation until the full set is reached. Additionally, for leagues using Handicomp's Golf League Network application, administrators have the option to apply hole score reduction, limiting how high a score can be taken on a single hole.

 The HGHS balances simplicity with statistical rigor, delivering a proven and equitable handicap system that has served the game for the past two decades.
