A New Era in Golf Handicapping

A golf handicap is a numerical measure of a golfer’s playing ability. It levels the playing field by allowing competitors of different skill levels to play against each other on equal terms. In essence, it estimates how many strokes over par a golfer is likely to shoot—where a lower handicap indicates a stronger player.

For generations, golf handicapping has relied on traditional, static formulas—designed by hand and often limited in scope. While these systems have served the game well, they’ve never fully addressed the varied needs of individual golfers, clubs, leagues, or associations.

That’s where artificial intelligence comes in. A.I.-powered score prediction is transforming the game. By leveraging machine learning, we can now offer the most accurate, flexible, and objective approach to handicapping the sport has ever seen.

A Primer – Different Handicap Types:

A.I. Handicap:
The A.I. system predicts the next score a golfer will shoot based on past performance, trends, and course data. The predicted score is then compared to par to calculate a handicap.   Example: Predicted Score = 92.74, Course Par = 72 → Handicap = 20.74 (rounded to 21)..

  • WHS® Index:
The World Handicap System® calculates a decimal-based Index (e.g., 9.7) using the best 8 out of the last 20 18-hole scores. That Index is then adjusted for course difficulty using slope and course rating to produce a Playing Handicap, which is a whole number (e.g., 11).
  • Handicomp Golf Handicap System (HGHS):
The HGHS calculates a decimal-based Base(e.g., 11.5) using the best 15 of the last 25 9-hole scores. That Base is then adjusted for course difficulty using yardage and par to produce a Tee Handicap, which is a whole number (e.g., 14). It was originally designed for league play.
  • Average Score Handicap:
This method simply averages most recent scores and produces a whole number handicap.  Example: A golfer who averages 90 may have a handicap of 18.
  • Custom Handicaps:
Generally, these are simple formulas. For example, averaging the best 3 of the last 5 scores and are generally used in league play.

Honoring Tradition While Embracing Innovation

We understand—golf is a game steeped in tradition, and for many, that’s part of its charm. Handicomp respects the deep roots of the sport and the systems that have guided it for generations. At the same time, we also recognize that change is happening all around us—and golf is not immune.

A.I. and machine learning are already shaping the game in subtle but powerful ways. From the design of clubs, shafts, and balls, to how tee times are priced, lawns are maintained, and marketing messages are crafted—A.I. is enhancing nearly every aspect of the golf experience.

So why not handicapping? If A.I. can make your gear better, your course more efficient, and communications more relevant, it can also bring greater clarity, fairness, and precision to how we measure skill and track progress.

We’re not here to erase tradition—we’re here to build on it. A.I.-powered handicapping doesn’t replace the spirit of the game; it refines how we understand and enjoy it. That’s our belief, and it’s why we do what we do.
